A Minitab alternative for small factories

Let us start where most comparison pages will not: for statistical analysis, Minitab is better than we are, and it is not close.

Design of experiments, regression, ANOVA, Gage R&R studies, reliability analysis, Weibull, the full hypothesis-testing suite — Minitab does all of it, does it properly, and has thirty years of validation behind it. If your job is to run a capability study, design an experiment or investigate a process problem statistically, buy Minitab. Nothing on this page argues otherwise.

The question worth asking is different: is that the job?

The two different jobs

A statistics package is a tool an engineer opens, points at a dataset and closes. What it produces is an analysis — accurate, static, and out of date the moment the next part is made.

Live SPC is something else. It is a chart that updates itself as the line runs, on a screen the shift supervisor can see, that raises a signal within minutes of the process moving. Nobody opens it. It is always open.

Most plants need both and buy only the first, because the first is the one with a name everyone knows.

Where Minitab is the wrong shape

Per-seat pricing meets shop-floor viewing. SPC is only worth doing if the people running the process can see the chart. Per-seat licensing makes that a budget decision, and the usual outcome is that the chart lives on one engineer's laptop, which is the same as no chart.

Desktop install meets a factory network. Getting a desktop statistics package installed, licensed and updated on machines in a plant is an IT project. It is a solvable one, and it is why so many plants are still running a version from several years ago.

Manual refresh meets a live process. Analysis is a thing you do. If the chart is only current when someone remembers to re-run it, the gap between the process drifting and anyone noticing is however long it is between people remembering.

What we do instead

  • Priced per production line, not per seat. Everyone on the floor can look at a chart; that is the point of the chart.
  • Nothing to install. A browser, and a full-screen shop-floor mode for a display in the hall.
  • Data comes to the chart. CSV export, a REST API, an on-prem collector for OPC UA or Modbus. The chart updates itself.
  • Limits are frozen and versioned. Every limit set records its baseline window, who locked it and when. Nothing is recomputed behind your back — which is the specific thing that makes a spreadsheet chart untrustworthy.
  • Rules run continuously, per characteristic, with an email when one trips.

What we do not do

Said plainly, because finding out later is worse:

  • No design of experiments, regression, ANOVA or hypothesis testing.
  • No Gage R&R or measurement systems analysis.
  • No reliability or Weibull analysis.
  • Fewer chart types: X̄-R, X̄-s, I-MR and c. No p, np, u, EWMA or CUSUM today.
  • No macro language.

If any of those are on your requirements list, we are not a replacement. Plenty of plants run both: Minitab on the quality engineer's desk for studies, live charts on the floor for control. They are not competing purchases.

Honest cases against us

  • You already own Minitab and it is working. Then this is not a problem worth money.
  • You are in a regulated industry that has validated Minitab. Revalidating is real work. We publish a validation pack, but the work is still yours.
  • You need one deep study, once. Buy a licence for a month.
