Earthquakes per hour
Every hour, the U.S. Geological Survey records a few hundred earthquakes worldwide. This chart plots how many. Counts do not behave like measurements: they cannot go below zero, and their spread is fixed by their average, so the limits are worked out a different way. It is the same chart you would use for defects per shift or complaints per week — and using the measurement version instead is why so many factory dashboards cry wolf.
